    Year 2

    Welcome to Year 2!

We would like to warmly welcome your child into Year 2. We are very excited to support them as they continue to grow, learn and develop at Red Hill Primary School and look forward to a fantastic year of exciting opportunities and memorable experiences!

At Red Hill, we have three Year 2 classes:

2KW Mrs Kimber and Mrs Wright

2LM Miss Laverick and Mrs Mehmet

    2H Miss Haynes

Mrs Llewellyn and Mrs Young run targeted interventions across the year group.

    Our Class Pioneers

Our Class Pioneers are inspirational people who have made a difference through their ideas, creativity, curiosity and determination. They remind us that being a pioneer means having the courage to think differently, follow your passions and make your own mark on the world.

    2KW- Floella Benjamin
A pioneering broadcaster, actress and children's author who has inspired generations through her creativity, resilience and dedication to improving the lives of young people.

“Children are our future, and we must give them every opportunity to succeed.”

    2LM- Louis Braille
A pioneering inventor and educator who created the Braille reading and writing system, opening up new opportunities for blind and visually impaired people around the world.

“Access to communication in the widest sense is access to knowledge.”

    2H- Zaha Hadid
A pioneering architect whose bold, innovative designs challenged conventions and transformed the world of architecture. She inspired others to think creatively and push the boundaries of what is possible.

"There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?"

    Curriculum

At Red Hill, we follow the CUSP curriculum for reading, writing, spelling, history, geography, art, DT and science. For RE and PSHE we follow the Jigsaw curriculum. Computing lessons follow the National Centre for Computing Education. Click here to access our curriculum overview

The Year 2 Curriculum Meeting Slides contain all the information shared at our parent and carer year group curriculum meetings at the start of the academic year.

    English

In reading this half-term, we will be building on our comprehension skills, including inference and retrieval, as well as exploring our personal responses to key texts.

In writing, we will be focusing on:

    - character descriptions

    - poetry developing vocabulary

    - simple retelling of a narrative

    - formal invitations

    - stories from other cultures

In Maths this half-term will be focusing on place value and addition and subtraction.

We will also be developing our arithmetic skills.

Supporting your child with their learning at home

Children will bring homework home every Friday in their homework books, and should hand them back into school every Wednesday.

    Weekly homework includes:

    • Maths – A short maths challenge linking to the week’s learning. Children should also log into TTRS (https://ttrockstars.com) and practise their multiplication recall.
    • Spellings – Children will have 10 spellings sent home linking to a spelling pattern being taught in class. These will be tested in the spelling session on a Wednesday morning.
    • Reading – Reading should be completed a minimum of 3x a week, but ideally for 10 minutes each evening. This can be completed with an adult, or children can choose to read independently. All reading sessions need to be recorded in their reading records, which should be brought into school daily. The children's reading books need to be handed in on a Wednesday for them to receive a new one to take home on the Friday.
