Curriculum
Please click below to see the curriculum map for Year 6 as well as the topic web for this half term. These are working documents however, so they may change as we progress into the term. The Year 6 Curriculum Meeting slides are also below.
Our Learning
Our topic for Spring 1 is 900 CE.
We will be learning that at 900 CE different ancient civilizations were rising and declining across the world. We will study the ancient Mayan civilization, the Kingdom of Benin and the rise of the Islamic
empire. We will need to be historians and use artefacts and historical sources to make observations about
the life cycle of civilizations and the legacies they leave us. What happens when empires grow? What
causes change and decline? What have we learnt from these past civilisations?
English
In English, we will be reading Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman and using our comprehension strategies and skills.
In writing, we will be focusing on:
Explanatory texts and third person adventure stories. We will also be building on our grammar and punctuation knowledge.
Maths
Maths this half term will be focusing on algebra and decimals. This will include:
We will also be developing our arithmetic skills in preparation for SATs
Supporting your child with their learning at home
Please see below for weekly homework sheets. Children should have brought these home every Friday in their homework books, and should hand them back into school every Wednesday.
Weekly homework includes:
Maths- A short maths challenge linking to the week’s learning. Children should also log into TTRS (https://ttrockstars.com) and practise their multiplication recall.
Spellings- Children will have 10 spellings sent home linking to a spelling pattern being taught in class. These will be tested in the spelling session on a Wednesday morning.
Reading comprehension- Children will have a reading comprehension to complete using their retrieval, inference and vocabulary skills that we have been working on in class.
Reading- Reading should be completed a minimum of 3x a week, but ideally for 10 minutes each evening. This can be completed with an adult, or children can choose to read independently. All reading sessions needs to be recorded in their reading records, which should be brought into school daily.
Please see below for a recommended reading list.
PE
We split Year 6 into 3 classes for PE. All children have PE on a Monday, then class 1 and class 2 also have PE on a Friday.
PE kits (as outlined in the uniform letter):
No football kits to worn to school. If children have a club after school, they need to bring this into school in a bag to change into before or after the club.
