Inspiring a love of learning

At Red Hill, we want every child to have an extraordinary school day, every day. Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and give children the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive both in school and beyond.

We believe children learn best when they are actively involved, challenged to think deeply and given opportunities to make meaningful connections between what they already know and what they are learning next.

Our curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and rooted in strong educational research. Alongside developing essential knowledge and skills, we place a strong emphasis on vocabulary, helping children to express themselves confidently and understand the world around them.

What do we teach?

We use the Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership (CUSP) for Reading, Writing, Spelling, Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. CUSP provides a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum, with carefully planned sequences that build on children's prior learning and reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Each subject is taught as a distinct discipline, helping children to understand its unique knowledge and skills. Where there are meaningful connections between subjects, we make these links explicit so that children can see the bigger picture and apply what they have learnt in different contexts.

Our long-term curriculum plans map out the knowledge and skills children will develop throughout their time at Red Hill. Clear end points help teachers to plan learning carefully, ensuring that new knowledge builds on what has come before and prepares children for what comes next.

We are committed to providing the highest quality teaching across the curriculum. Where specialist expertise can enrich children's learning, we make the most of specialist teachers. Currently, specialist teachers support learning in PE, Computing and Music.

How do children learn?

Mathematics

We use White Rose Mathematics, alongside additional resources, to support the teaching of mathematics. The approach provides a strong foundation in mathematical understanding and promotes mastery, allowing children to develop fluency, reason mathematically and solve problems with confidence.

Reading, Writing and Spelling

CUSP is used for Reading and Writing across the school and for Spelling in Key Stage 2. Its carefully structured approach supports children in developing a rich vocabulary, strong subject knowledge and the ability to communicate effectively.

Phonics

In the early stages of reading, we use Little Wandle Phonics. Its clear structure, high-quality resources and systematic approach give children the strong foundations they need to become confident, enthusiastic readers.

Early Years

In EYFS, children learn through a thematic approach which provides exciting, meaningful experiences and opportunities to explore, investigate and develop their understanding of the world.

Our EYFS curriculum is carefully designed to lay the foundations for the knowledge, vocabulary and skills children will build on as they move into Year 1 and throughout their time at Red Hill.

Bringing learning to life

We want learning to be memorable and meaningful. Lessons are carefully planned to be engaging and appropriately challenging, with children encouraged to think, question, discuss, practise and apply their learning.

Our curriculum is designed to build progressively over time. Children regularly revisit important knowledge and skills, strengthening their understanding and making connections with previous learning.

Alongside classroom teaching, we provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities and experiences. These might include practical activities, visits, visitors and opportunities to apply learning in new and exciting ways.

These experiences help children to understand how their learning connects to the wider world and enable them to make links within and across subjects.

How do we know our curriculum is making a difference?

At Red Hill, assessment is an important part of everyday teaching. It helps teachers understand what children know, what they can do and what they need to learn next.

We do not believe assessment should be excessive or onerous. Instead, teachers use a range of approaches throughout lessons to check understanding and respond to children's needs. Questioning, discussion, talk partners, mini whiteboards, quizzes and practical activities all help teachers identify what children have remembered and where further teaching is needed.

Children regularly revisit key knowledge and skills so that important learning becomes embedded in their long-term memory. Summative assessments are also used where appropriate to support teachers in building a clear picture of children's progress and attainment.

Monitoring and evaluating our curriculum

We continually reflect on the quality, impact and relevance of our curriculum. Senior leaders and subject leaders work together to ensure that children experience a broad, ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum.

We look at:

• the coverage, breadth and progression of learning

• the quality of children's work in books and online

• learning displayed within the school environment

• children's views and experiences through pupil voice

• assessment information and pupil outcomes

• the quality of teaching and learning through learning walks

• teacher assessment within individual subjects

This ongoing evaluation helps us identify what is working well and where we can make improvements.

Our ultimate goal

Most importantly, we want children to leave Red Hill as curious, knowledgeable and confident learners who are excited about discovering more.

We want them to remember not just what they have learnt, but the experiences, questions and moments of discovery that made their learning memorable.
