Did you know that….?

  • Reading for as little as 6 minutes a day reduces stress by 68%
  • Reading is the fastest way to build vocabulary, speech and language
  • Every book counts, whether it is a book from school or a child’s favourite
  • Reading books builds reading fluency
  • Reading books can calm and focus a child
  • Shared reading times, talking about the book and asking questions strengthens the bond between parents/carers and their child and develops their thinking and reasoning skills
  • Develops skills across all subjects taught at school

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what's printed on the page. Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. Reading to and with your child also improves listening and attention skills.
