French at Red Hill Primary School

At Red Hill Primary School, French is taught using resources from the online system Language Angels. The scheme of work shows progression across the four years of KS2. It aligns well with the five key strands set out in the KS2 Languages Framework - Oracy, Literacy, Intercultural Understanding, Knowledge About Languages and Language Learning Strategies.

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. (National Curriculum, 2014).

The scheme of work allows children to develop their sense of belonging to the wider world, express ideas and thoughts in another language and understand and respond to French speakers. We challenge children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, and to understand and respond to its speakers, which is essential, practical knowledge for all global citizens.

Through the use of games, flashcards and songs, we engage children to develop specific knowledge of French, learning words and structures that enable them to ask and answer questions, listen to, read and understand stories, songs, poems and other short texts, and to write from memory.

I – Inspire children to develop a sense of belonging to the wider World.

C – Challenge children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, and to understand and respond to its speakers, which is essential, practical knowledge for all global citizens.

E – Engage through the use of flashcards, games and songs to develop specific knowledge of French, learning words and structures that enable them to ask and answer questions.

In French lessons, we inspire children to develop their sense of belonging to the wider world and embark on a journey towards a wealth of opportunities in their future lives. We provide opportunities to explore the relationship between language and identity, develop an international outlook and grow into an enhanced understanding of the world and their place within it.
