Red Hill’s Governing Body: what we do?

The Governing Body of Red Hill Primary School works together as a team, the equivalent of a board of directors, under the leadership of the chair of governors. It makes strategic decisions about how the school is run which are in the long-term best interests of the pupils. It aims to provide sound and efficient leadership and governance, in partnership with, and in support of, the head teacher and her staff.

Red Hill’s governing body has 16 members: the head teacher; staff; parents; and people nominated by the local authority. Our body can also have a number of ‘associate governors’ who are elected by the board to contribute to specific issues.

The majority of the work carried out by our governors is done via four sub-committees covering:

  • Teaching and Learning
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Personnel
  • Resources

The full governing body meets once every term.  The sub-committees meet at least once per term or more often if required. The focus for our governing body, as with any maintained school or academy, is threefold:

  • ensuring that our school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • holding our head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school; and
  • ensuring the school’s resources are used in a sound, proper and efficient manner.

The head teacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school, in addition to the educational performance of the school.

The governing body of Red Hill welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and is always available in person for drop-in sessions at parent open evenings.  Governors can also be contacted by email at governors@redhill.bromley.sch.uk.  The governors are happy to hear your concerns, issues, questions and suggestions and will ensure that you receive a timely response from the most appropriate person.

I am now an HR Director in a Multi Academy Trust in Dulwich so I am now able to support from a wider HR perspective. "I have been a governor now for ten years and have been joint chair of the Resources Committee in recent years and a member of the Personnel Committee. I also have a particular focus on the use of pupil premium funding in the school. As a parent governor when I first became a governor I wanted to take an active role in determining and understanding my daughters education. I also realised that this was a good role for giving something back to the community and for understanding the effects of government and school policy on the future outcomes of children. This is why I have continued as a governor after my daughter left the school. It has been great to see how the school has developed both in teaching and learning and the fabric of the school over time and to be a small part of that."

"I live locally and my daughter went to Red hill Primary school so I have a strong affinity with this school. Since I was asked to become a Governor ( more than 10 years ago), I have considered it a privilege to have hopefully had some useful input into the running of the school. As I'm not a career professional, I do find some of the technical aspects of our remit ( such as Raise On line) quite challenging to follow, but our specialists in this field know how to convey the basis of any scheme. being a property Consultant, my main responsibility has been the upkeep and improvement of the site and buildings, which continue to develop as far as finances will allow, the most recent examples being an extension to the main office and a refurbishment of the main hall, which is currently under construction."
